Washington, June 6 (IANS) Admiring celebrities, even from afar, can help people with low self-esteem to see themselves in a more flattering light, according to a new study. The study, by researchers from the University at Buffalo and State University of New York, illustrates how such “parasocial” relationships can benefit people facing difficulties in interpersonal relationships.

The researchers based their study on 100 undergraduates to examine the relationship between self-esteem, parasocial relationship closeness and self-discrepancies.

Australian Mormons Donate Four Tons of Food to Needy Families

PERTH, Australia 4 June 2008 Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints collected grocery items recently for the St Vincent de Paul Society to distribute to families going through hard times. The effort was tied to this year’s Australian National Families Week in May.

“Despite the economic boom, there are many families in need,” Genevieve de Souza, Western Australian president of the St Vincent de Paul Society said at the hand-over ceremony. “Charitable organizations have to turn needy people away for the lack of food donations.”

You’ve no doubt read recently about the soaring foreclosure rates and the severe cutbacks that schools, government and businesses have faced. In April, the Pew Research Center said a new study showed that one out of every seven U.S. workers feared being laid off in the next 12 months.

The money woes have reached the faith community as well.

A study released earlier this month by LifeWay Research shows that 72 percent of Southern Baptist pastors indicate that difficulties in the U.S. economy are negatively affecting their churches, and 27 percent indicate that their congregations will not meet their budgets if current trends continue.

There is a picture that stands out among the many photos of Sidney Weber inside the Sugar Creek home where she lived.

The candid shot, sitting front and center atop the family’s black piano, is Sidney with the hollow remains of an broken, orange basketball piñata on her head. There is a wide, toothy smile painted across her face and both of her thumbs are cast in the “thumbs up” position. The picture, her mom explains, was from a “High School Musical”-themed party.

88-Year-Old Man Who Made Quilts for Charity Passes Away

Three months ago we introduced you to an 88-year-old Sugar City man whose goal was to tie 700 quilts for the LDS Humanitarian Center.

Sadly, Russ Wilding passed away at 12:30 Wednesday morning.

Every quilt Russ ever made was given away. After reporter Nate Eaton met with him in March, he made Nate a quilt.

Although Russ is gone, his life lives on literally in hundreds of quilts scattered across the world.

For the past seven months, Richard Alexander and three other young Mormon missionaries have dressed up in white shirts and dark ties and knocked on doors in the neighborhoods where they live.

In Alexander’s mission field â€” which includes University City, Vinita Park, Hanley Hills, Pagedale and Wellston â€” the face that greets the white 21-year-old is, more often than not, black.

For a scene in the Sunny Deol-directed The Man, Shilpa Shetty had to slap her co-star Sudhanshu Pandey. And if the latter is to be believed, the actress was very reluctant to do so.

“It was an emotional scene where I was supposed to console her and she was required to slap me in a fit of rage. But Shilpa was so reluctant and scared. She had to be literally convinced to slap me to get the shot right,” Sudhanshu, a singer, model and actor, said.
